Apple iPhone 16 preorders are live this Friday: here’s everything you need to know

Apple has just confirmed that iPhone 16 preorders will go live this Friday worldwide, so there’s not long to wait to get your hands on the latest premium flagships from the brand.

The new devices are, as expected, the Apple iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. All four carry significant new upgrades to the chipset, cameras, and a host of new AI features that the brand is calling ‘Apple Intelligence’. Overall, Apple has put a massive focus on not only internal hardware improvements but also on software with these devices, although you’ll still see new colors and fresh design tweaks like the new Camera Control button.

What promotions will there be?

  • Trade-in rebates confirmed for both US and UK
  • Up to $650 off at Apple
  • Up to £645 off at Apple UK
  • Up to $1,000 off at major carriers

While preorders aren’t live just yet, Apple has already confirmed several of the trade-in rebates that will be available from Friday. As expected, Apple itself has a rebate of up to $650 / £645 off for unlocked devices across the entire range, which is exactly the same discount that’s been available at the official store for a few months now.

Apple’s keynote event also mentioned trade-in rebates of up to $1,000 off in the US, which will almost certainly be from AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile. No deals have been listed on the Apple site just yet so we’ll have to wait until Friday for official confirmation in regard to specifics. Similarly, contract deals at the major networks in the UK won’t be going live until Friday so we can’t list pricing just yet.

Our standalone iPhone 16 deals page will be covering launch promotions in more detail over the next few days, including recommendations for the best savings this Friday.

What’s new with the iPhone 16?

  • New A18 and A18 Pro chips
  • Massive focus on new AI-integrated features
  • 48MP “Fusion” camera
  • Physical camera control function

Both the iPhone 16 and 16 Pro represent fairly substantial upgrades compared to the previous models. From the new A18 series chips built from the ground up for AI integration to the improved cameras, these devices offer plenty of enticing new features.

First up, the A18 Series chipsets come with the debut of ‘Apple Intelligence’, which, as the name suggests, is a whole suite of new AI features across the entire range of existing Apple apps. Think ChatGPT-like language models for texts or emails, image and emoji generators, and a new ‘Visual Intelligence’ app that is just like Google Lens.

In terms of hardware, the iPhone 16 series not only features new chipsets but also an improved camera with a new physical camera control button that directly interacts with the camera app. Apple is calling the new 48MP main camera the ‘Fusion camera’ since it can seamlessly switch between high-resolution images and more storage-friendly images, plus Stereoscopic capture for Apple Vision Pro.

The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max feature slightly bigger 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch displays with slimmer bezels versus their predecessors. The main upgrades for the Pro models this year include the option for 4K video at 120FPS (perfect for slow motion) as well as the usual 48MP wide angle lens and 5x telephoto (12MP and 2x on the standard iPhone 16).

Leak reveals new entry-level Kindle could arrive as soon as this week

The base model of the Amazon Kindle (2022) has been out of stock on the online retail giant’s shopping sites in various territories for a while now and there’s probably a good explanation why. It seems as though Amazon is ready to release a new Kindle ereader soon.

A Spanish retailer accidentally listed a new 2024 edition of the entry-level Kindle on its site (as spotted by Good e-Reader), with a release date listed for September 30. While the listing has since been taken down, it was up long enough for some of the upgrades to be revealed.

If this listing is true, the upcoming 2024 Kindle – which will be the 12th generation – will have a more eco-friendly build than any of the Kindles before it. The ereader is rumored to be made with 75% recycled plastic and 90% recycled magnesium. Amazon is also apparently changing its packaging for the new ereader, making it 98% wood fiber sourced from either recycled materials or responsibly managed forests.

And, if the leaked image is anything to go by, it’s also going to come in a lovely match green colorway.

The listing has also revealed quite a bit about the device’s specs, starting with a 300ppi screen – which is standard for grayscale ereaders today – with 25% more brightness than the current 11th-generation model.

Like the 2022 Kindle, the 12th-gen ereader will support dark mode and, according to the leak, will also offer faster page turns, but it’s unclear whether the latter will be due to a better processor or if Amazon has adopted the latest E Ink Carta 1300 screen technology. This new display debuted in the 2024 Kobo Clara BW, making it one of the best ereaders in terms of legibility and performance.

It will also come with 16GB of onboard storage, will offer a battery life of up to 8 weeks, which is better than the approximate 4 weeks per charge we got in our Amazon Kindle (2022) review. According to the dimensions leaked, it’s going to be the exact same size and thickness as the current model at 157.8 x 108.6 x 8 mm.

Amazon Kindle 2024: what I’d really like to see

The one major upgrade I would love to see on the new 2024 Kindle is the use of the E Ink Carta 1300 display. This screen tech increases page responsiveness by 25% and adds more contrast – I was so impressed with it on the Kobo Clara BW that I didn’t care the Kindle competitor didn’t get better battery life over its Clara 2E predecessor.

Better yet, I would love to see Amazon take the competition to Kobo and release a color ereader to rival the Kobo Clara Colour. Kobo now has two color ereaders compared to none from Amazon.

Adjustable warm light will also be a fantastic addition to the newest edition of the Kindle. Kobo’s base Clara BW offers it already, but then it also costs more than the entry-level Kindle.

I would also like to see the base Kindle get waterproofing – the current model misses out the IPX8 rating the Kindle Paperwhite (2021) has, which also puts it behind all the current Kobo ereaders.

And lastly, I really would like to be able to sideload EPUB format ebooks without having to use the Send To Kindle app.

The iPhone 18 series could include a variable aperture, ‘significantly enhancing’ the camera

The iPhone 18 series could include a variable aperture, ‘significantly enhancing’ the camera

Apple, like most phone makers, puts a lot of focus on improving the cameras from one model to the next, and we now have an idea of what the next two generations of camera updates might look like.

Numerous leaks have already pointed to 48MP telephoto cameras for the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, with the whole iPhone 17 line possibly getting 24MP front-facing cameras. But with the iPhone 18 line, Apple might focus on the aperture rather than megapixels.

This is according to reputable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who in his latest post on Medium (via @Jukanlosreve) claimed that Apple will be equipping the main camera on the “high-end” iPhone 18 models with a variable aperture.

By high-end he presumably means the iPhone 18 Pro Max and likely also the iPhone 18 Pro, but he doesn’t mention the phones by name.

What Kuo does say is that this variable aperture would “significantly” enhance the photography experience. The aperture – the size of the lens opening – on most cameras is fixed, and having a variable aperture means you can control how much light reaches the sensor. This in turn gives you more control over exposure – you can open the aperture to its widest setting for better low-light shots, for example – and it also enables you to create optical depth-of-field effects to blur backgrounds, rather than relying on software processing.

So this sounds like it would be a worthwhile upgrade, and while we’d take Kuo’s reporting with a pinch of salt for now – especially as this is a very early leak – he does have a great track record for Apple information.

Not the first variable-aperture phone

The Xiaomi 14 Ultra has a variable aperture (Image credit: Future / Roland Moore-Colyer)

If this claim does prove to be accurate, the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max wouldn’t be the first smartphones with a variable-aperture lens. Samsung equipped the Galaxy S9 series with variable-aperture cameras way back in 2018, and also used variable aperture-cameras in the Samsung Galaxy S10 line.

We were quite taken with the tech in our Samsung Galaxy S9 review, noting that it particularly aided low-light shots, but it wasn’t something Samsung stuck with beyond the S10 series, so it presumably didn’t lead to increased sales.

More recently, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra also has a variable aperture camera, which coupled with a 1-inch sensor resulted in “fantastic low-light performance and unrivaled image quality” according to our Xiaomi 14 Ultra review.

Which iPhone should you buy? How to choose your Apple smartphone

It’s been almost a month since Apple released its latest iPhones, and as our iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max reviews detail, we’ve been impressed with this year’s lineup of flagship Apple handsets.

Each new iPhone brings substantial upgrades over its respective predecessor – the Camera Control button and A18 chipsets, for instance, are a highlight across the entire series – but there are still major differences to be found between every iPhone 16 model, as well as between the previous-generation iPhones still sold by Apple and third-party retailers.

So, whether you’re a casual phone user or a diehard Apple fan, you might be left wondering which iPhone is best for you. That’s why we’ve put together this handy guide as a quick and easy reference point for those looking to pick up a new iPhone.

Disclaimer: Apple Intelligence

Apple has called the iPhone 16 lineup the “first iPhones designed from the ground up for Apple Intelligence”, but at the time of writing, Apple’s AI features are still conspicuously absent from any of its devices. An official launch is expected in October.

In this article, we reference the upcoming ability of the iPhone 16 series and iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max to run Apple Intelligence, but until Apple Intelligence is officially released, we can’t recommend that you buy an iPhone based on its future AI potential.

iPhone 16: A compelling all-rounder

  • The best iPhone for most people
  • A lot of Apple’s latest tech for a fairly reasonable price – Camera Control and Action Button
  • The cheapest iPhone to get Apple Intelligence
  • Starts at $799 / £799 / AU$1,399

The iPhone 16 is a great all-round phone that many people will find serves their needs perfectly – in fact, it’s our pick for the best iPhone for most people in our list of the best iPhones. The iPhone 16 packs the same great 6.1-inch OLED display and 48MP main camera as the iPhone 15 into a modernized design, while the new A18 chipset and increased RAM capacity of 8GB boost performance.

Our iPhone 16 review found the brand-new Camera Control button to be a solid reason to upgrade, and the Action Button inherited from the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max gives this base model iPhone more customization potential than ever. There’s never been a smaller gap between the base and Pro models.

The iPhone 16 is still stuck with a 60hz display and 12MP ultrawide camera, but if you can handle these limitations, this is a more powerful base-model iPhone than we’ve seen in years. It’s a great choice for all but the most demanding users.

What’s more, the iPhone 16 will get full Apple Intelligence integration when iOS 18.1 releases in October.

iPhone 16 Plus: the same, just bigger

  • The same great all-round experience as the iPhone 16 with a larger design
  • Our pick for the best battery life in an iPhone
  • The only Plus compatible with Apple Intelligence
  • Starts at $899 / £899 / AU$1,599

The iPhone 16 Plus is the iPhone 16 with a bigger screen and larger dimensions, making this the best choice for people who just want a regular iPhone that’s a bit larger. It sets itself apart with its monstrous battery life, and is our choice for the best iPhone for battery life thanks to its impressive longevity on a single charge.

Our iPhone 16 Plus review found that the phone lasted for 16 hours and 29 minutes of mixed use on a single charge, which is spectacular not just for an iPhone, but for any smartphone.

As with its smaller sibling, the iPhone 16 Plus gains the new Camera Control button, offering more options than ever for taking pictures and videos. Our review found it to be a great choice for photographers, with the larger display enhancing the post-shoot viewing experience.

The iPhone 16 Plus has a 6.7-inch 60Hz OLED display with the same pixel density as the iPhone 16, and otherwise identical internal specs. You get the same A18 chipset and 8GB of RAM under the hood, the same 48MP main camera and 12MP ultrawide camera, and the same vibrant color options and updated design. It’s the same great phone, just bigger.

iPhone 16 Pro: pocket-sized power

(Image credit: Future / Lance Ulanoff)

  • The latest and greatest specs in a compact design
  • Slightly larger than the iPhone 15 Pro at 6.3 inches with slimmer bezels
  • Triple camera system with 5x optical zoom
  • Starts at $999 / £999 / AU$1,799

The iPhone 16 Pro packs all of Apple’s best smartphone specs into a compact package. This year’s Pro iPhone boasts an enlarged 6.3-inch OLED display with a variable 1-120Hz refresh rate, the same triple-camera system as the iPhone 16 Pro Max, and the blazing-fast A18 Pro chipset with 8GB of RAM.

The iPhone 16 Pro inherits the 5x telephoto lens from the iPhone 15 Pro Max, an upgrade from the 3x lens found on the iPhone 15 Pro. This telephoto camera sits alongside a 48MP main camera and a 48MP ultra-wide camera, and all three cameras gain new control options from the Camera Control button. There’s also a new 4K 120fps slow-motion video mode.

The A18 chipset brings substantial performance boosts to the iPhone 16 Pro, and Apple pledges up to 15% faster CPU performance and up to 20% faster GPU performance than the previous generation. Our iPhone 16 Pro review notes that the phone simply flew through anything we tried to test it with.

This year’s Pro iPhones have the exact same camera system and internals, which makes the choice between the two more about personal preference.

The iPhone 16 Pro is noticeably smaller and, at a weight of 199g, it’s 28g lighter than the iPhone 16 Pro Max; differences which do add up over time. The iPhone 16 Pro is also substantially cheaper than the iPhone 16 Pro Max, but it comes with only 128GB of storage to start with, compared to the latter’s 256GB.

iPhone 16 Pro Max: The most powerful iPhone ever

(Image credit: Future / Lance Ulanoff)

  • The best iPhone overall – get this if you want the most powerful iPhone possible
  • The 6.9-inch display is the largest on an iPhone, ever
  • Triple camera system with 5x optical zoom
  • Starts at $1,199 / £1,199 / AU$2,149

The iPhone 16 Pro Max is the largest and most powerful iPhone ever made, and our pick for the best iPhone overall. If you want the best performance, the largest screen, and the sharpest cameras, this is the one to buy. As our iPhone 16 Pro Max review notes, it’s a “beautiful, intelligent beast”, but it comes at a hefty price tag as a result.

The iPhone 16 Pro Max expands on its predecessor both physically and internally. It sports a new 6.9-inch 120Hz OLED display; a small size increase on the iPhone 15 Pro Max which is facilitated by slimmed-down bezels (though the chassis is physically larger, too).

The A18 Pro chipset promises 20% faster CPU performance and 15% faster GPU performance compared to the A17 Pro in the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max – though it’s genuinely hard to imagine who needs this much performance.

As for cameras, you’re looking at the same system as last year’s iPhone 15 Pro Max. The iPhone 16 Pro Max comes equipped with a 48MP main camera, a 48MP ultra-wide camera, and a 12MP telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom. The Camera Control button gives this class-leading camera system new and intuitive control options for shooting photos and videos, with a new slow-motion 4K 120fps video mode to boot.

This year’s Pro and Pro Max models are identical in the camera, display, and performance departments, so which is right for you will come down more to personal preference. The iPhone 16 Pro Max is a truly large phone, and weighs in at 227g – 28g more than the smaller Pro. It’s also tied with the iPhone 15 Pro Max for the most expensive iPhone Apple has ever made.

iPhone 15 Pro & iPhone 15 Pro Max: Power and AI for less

  • Discontinued, but still readily available at third party retailers like Amazon
  • Pro power and Apple Intelligence in a slightly more affordable package
  • A17 chipset is still overpowered for most use cases
  • Price varies by vendor

The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max remain great buys considering that they’ll be the only previous-generation iPhones to gain access to Apple Intelligence when Apple’s suite of AI features launches in October.

With the still-blazing-fast A17 Pro chipset and 8GB of RAM – the same amount as the iPhone 16 series – the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max are equipped to handle Apple Intelligence and pretty much anything else you can throw at them.

The camera system is also near-enough identical to the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max – a 48MP main camera, a 48MP ultrawide camera, and a 12MP telephoto camera ensure photos and videos are class-leading. You can also record 4K video at up to 60fps.

You do miss out on the new Camera Control and a bit of extra performance headroom compared to the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, but at this level, it’s fairly difficult to find the upper limit. Top-end iPhones have been extremely powerful phones for years now, and as our iPhone 15 Pro review and iPhone 15 Pro Max review suggest, it’s unlikely you’ll be disappointed with either model.

The pair are, officially, discontinued, but third-party retailers continue to sell both models with no signs of stock running out yet.

iPhone 15 & iPhone 15 Plus: Capable, now cheaper

(Image credit: Future / Lance Ulanoff)

  • Capable iPhones for people who don’t care about AI – no Apple Intelligence support at all
  • iPhone 15 is our pick for the best value iPhone
  • USB-C and Dynamic Island
  • Starts at $699 / £699 / AU$1,249

Apple continues to sell the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus directly for a discounted price, and these remain very capable handsets with great cameras and modern designs – the iPhone 15 is our pick for the best value iPhone because it offers so much for its newly lowered price.

The main caveat to buying an iPhone 15 or iPhone 15 Plus now is that this pair of iPhones will never support Apple Intelligence. This does raise some questions about whether the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are good long-term purchases, as we don’t yet know how heavily Apple will lean on AI for future features and iOS updates.

Regardless, there are still some reasons to buy the iPhone 15 over the cheaper iPhone 14. The phones were the first standard iPhones to get the Dynamic Island and USB-C; moderate quality of life upgrades that really do add to the user experience over time.

And the combination of the A16 Bionic chipset and 6GB of RAM still provides enough power for most people’s needs – indeed, our iPhone 15 review found that the phone has “more than enough power for most iPhone owners”.

iPhone 14 & iPhone 14 Plus: Split difference

(Image credit: Future / Lance Ulanoff)

  • If you need a cheaper big iPhone, the iPhone 14 Plus is your go-to
  • Few reasons to buy the base iPhone 14
  • Satellite connectivity for emergencies and crash detection
  • Starts at $599 / £599 / AU$1,049

Towards the tail end of Apple’s current iPhone lineup sits the iPhone 14, which was a relatively tough sell when it launched in 2022 due to it inheriting the same 6.1-inch screen, 12MP main and ultrawide cameras, squared-off design, and A15 Bionic chipset as the iPhone 13, which launched a year prior.

The iPhone 13 was discontinued with the release of the iPhone 16 series, but now it’s the iPhone 15 that makes the iPhone 14 seem out of place. The iPhone 14 is the last mainline iPhone to feature a lightning port and the last base model to not get the Dynamic Island – for just $100 less than the iPhone 15, the iPhone 14 already feels dated.

Furthermore, with how cheap the iPhone 13 can be from third-party retailers, there’s little point in buying the iPhone 14 unless you really need the scant exclusive features (satellite connectivity being the main one) or Apple warranty.

The iPhone 14 Plus is a slightly different story – it has a bit more weight to it (both figuratively and literally) as Apple’s cheapest big phone. The iPhone 14 Plus was the first in the Plus series, so there’s no older model to pick up for a better deal – if you need a cheaper big iPhone, that’s your best bet.

iPhone 13: The secret gem

(Image credit: Future / Lance Ulanoff)

  • Discontinued, and in low supply – get it while you still can
  • A great value buy, especially compared to the iPhone 14
  • Similar specs to the iPhone SE
  • Price varies by vendor

The iPhone 13 is discontinued, but you can still find new units from third-party retailers if you’re willing to compromise on color or storage capacity. If you’re looking for a cheap, modern, and capable iPhone, the iPhone 13 is something of a secret gem, with a nearly identical spec sheet to the more recent iPhone 14.

The iPhone 13 comes equipped with the A15 Bionic chipset, a 6.1-inch 60Hz OLED display, 12MP main, ultrawide, and selfie cameras, and an aluminum and glass construction that are all identical to its follow-up. It comes with 4GB of RAM, which is slightly less than the iPhone 14, and has a slightly smaller quoted battery life. Still, as noted in our iPhone 13 review, the user experience between the two is likely to be remarkably similar.

This makes the iPhone 13 a profoundly good choice for budget-conscious users who want something a bit more advanced than the simpler iPhone SE – but act fast, as it’s unlikely to stick around for much longer.

iPhone SE: Budget-friendly nostalgia

  • Our pick for best budget iPhone – the cheapest phone sold by Apple
  • iPhone 8 design, with Touch ID home button
  • We think an update is on the way
  • Starts at $429 / £429 / AU$719

For budget-focused buyers, the iPhone SE sits at the low end of the iPhone hierarchy, both in terms of specs and price. The current third-generation iPhone SE is essentially an iPhone 8 chassis with the specs of an iPhone 13, with a 4.7-inch screen, 12MP main camera, 5G connectivity, and the A15 Bionic chipset. It’s also the last iPhone with a home button, making it a great choice for those who value familiarity or struggle with on-screen gestures.

Our iPhone SE review found that the A15 Bionic chip – shared with the flagship iPhone 13 – gives the iPhone SE masses of headroom, making this a surprisingly powerful choice for mobile gaming and even content creation. It’s still our choice for the best budget iPhone two years after launch.

We think an iPhone SE refresh is on the way soon, which we expect will say goodbye to the home button and adopt a design more akin to the base-model iPhone 14. So, if you’re a fan of the old iPhone design and the Touch ID-enabled home button, it could be wise to act fast on this one.

There are also AI-assisted tools like the ability to turn a sketch into a full image. Up to 16 hours of battery life and a neat S Pen stylus prove useful.

Up to $300 off one of Samsung’s best budget tablets is a superb deal. The 10.9-inch display is ideal for portability and with incredibly long battery life the Tab S9 FE will keep going all day, even when pushed to its limits. There’s 128GB of storage, which provides enough room to store all your apps, although you can upgrade to 256 GB if you need extra space. We’ve seen Samsung offer a $100 upfront discount on this device before but today’s trade-in rebate of up to $400 is a record-low.

View Deal

The OnePlus Pad 2 is now a bit of a bargain for a rather powerful and capable Android tablet. For the price, you get a 12.1-inch display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset and 67W fast charging; not bad for a tablet now under $500.

View Deal

Best Buy has discounted the 256GB iPad 10.2 (2021) – also known as the iPad 9th-generation. Despite its age, this iPad offers a gorgeous 10.2-inch screen with True Tone technology, decent battery life (we got around 10 hours in our testing), and it’ll also continue to be supported with software updates until at least 2027. Put simply, the iPad 10.2 (2021) is the best iPad if you’re on a budget.

View Deal

Apple’s previous-gen iPad mini is a fantastic all-rounder. Its powerful A15 Bionic chip delivers all the performance most people need, while the 8.3-inch Liquid Retina display is small enough to make the device beautifully portable. The mini’s display has True Tone support, P3 wide color, and ultra-low reflectivity, so it looks great wherever you’re using it. Walmart’s $110 discount is impressive, though we have seen this iPad as low as $349.99 at Amazon previously.

View Deal

Amazon’s Cyber Monday sale has knocked a welcome $40 off the price of the brand-new, M4-powered iPad mini. You’ll have to choose the Space Gray model for the maximum saving, though smaller discounts are also available on the other color variants. In our Apple iPad mini A17 Pro (2024) review, we praised the new tablet’s “pocket-friendly design” and “ability to support Apple Intelligence.”

View Deal

Amazon has now dropped the latest standard iPad to a rather low $279. In our iPad 10.9 (2022) review, we said Apple’s latest base-level tablet is a big upgrade over the previous generation model, offering a larger Liquid Retina display, a new A14 Bionic chip, improved cameras, USB-C support, and a sleek design.

View Deal

Getting $100 off a tablet that could double as a laptop is not bad at all. This iPad Pro features a high-resolution Liquid Retina XDR display, strong battery life, and 256GB of storage. These specs are impressive already but when paired with the latest M4 chip you get a tablet that is truly special indeed. The power makes it possible to effortlessly perform even the most demanding of tasks, including photo and video editing as well as gaming.

View Deal

If the Amazon deal above is sold out or over, then Walmart’s $924 deal on the new iPad Pro is still worth a look. In our iPad Pro (2024) review (albeit for the 13-inch model), we describe Apple’s latest flagship tablet as “the impossibly thin king of iPads – and maybe all tablets.” .

View Deal

If you want the biggest and best iPad, Amazon has the iPad Pro 13-inch (2024) on sale right now. It’s a mighty tablet and one that’s all the more attractive with $200 off its price tag. For just over $1,000 you get the mighty M4 chip, a large Liquid Retina XDR display, and 256GB of onboard storage, though if you need more then the 512GB iPad Pro also has $200 off at Amazon.

View Deal

You can save a cool $100 on the latest 256GB iPad Air over at Amazon. Nearly $600 isn’t cheap for an iPad but it does next you a beautiful Liquid Retina display, a MacBook-level M2 chipset, a landscape-oriented front-facing camera, and landscape stereo speakers with spatial audio.

View Deal

If you want extra screen space, you can go for the iPad Air 13-inch (M2) instead. As well as being available at its lowest price yet, it has the same processing power as the 11-inch model. All the nice extras and useful features are included, too, as well as that larger display. If you need more of a laptop replacement, this is the right size for you. Add on a Magic Keyboard for the most convenience.

To compliment an 11-inch iPad Pro or iPad Air, Apple’s Magic Keyboard offers a smart combination of keyboard, trackpad, and tilting stand to transform an iPad into a pseudo computer. It’s an essential accessory for people who want to be productive on Apple’s tablets, and with $59 off it’s more appealing than ever.

Amazon’s Kindle Paperwhite is always a best seller at holiday sales, and today’s deal brings the price down to a new record low. The waterproof e-reader features a large 7-inch glare-free display, a battery that lasts for weeks, and a single charge that lasts up to 12 weeks.

View Deal

Kindle ereaders are always popular deals, and I predict this discount on Amazon’s all-new model will go fast. Amazon’s latest Kindle was just released this month, and you can find a first-time discount, which brings the price down to $89.99. The 2024 Kindle is Amazon’s lightest and most compact e-reader and features a six-inch glare-free display and a battery life that lasts six weeks.

  • Very: 10% off electricals when using this Very voucher code
  • Box: exclusive £20 Off when you spend £400 or more by entering this BOX UK promo code
Not the cheapest we’ve seen this older iPad drop to but Laptops Direct has discounted the iPad 10.2 (2021) – also known as the iPad 9th-generation – to £239, a reasonable price for a tablet with a gorgeous 10.2-inch screen with True Tone technology, decent battery life (we got around 10 hours in our testing), and slick software. In simple terms, the iPad 10.2 (2021) is the best iPad if you’re on a budget.

View Deal

Over on Amazon, you can get a 64GB 2022 iPad for £289. Now that’s not a huge discount, but it’s a saving that’s enough to load the iPad with some premium apps and games. As you’ll see in our our iPad 10.9 (2022) review, it’s an Apple tablet well worth your attention.

View Deal

Apple slashed the recommended starting price of the iPad 10.9 (2022) to £349 earlier this year, but John Lewis has cut that number even further to £289. FOr an entry-level iPad that a larger Liquid Retina display, a new A14 Bionic chip, improved cameras, USB-C support, and refreshed design, that’s a good price.

View Deal

Amazon’s Cyber Monday sale has knocked a welcome £30 off the price of the brand-new, M4-powered iPad mini. This small-but-welcome saving applies to all color variants, and the 256GB model has been discounted, too. In our Apple iPad mini A17 Pro (2024) review, we praised the new tablet’s “pocket-friendly design” and “ability to support Apple Intelligence.” Even if you can find the previous-gen iPad mini on sale for cheaper than £469, we think this new model is the better, more future-proof buy.

View Deal

The new iPad Air is the closest thing you can get to an iPad Pro without having to pay upwards of £1,000, which is why we believe it’s the best iPad for students in 2024. For almost half the price of Apple’s professional-grade iPad, you’ll get a beautiful Liquid Retina display, a MacBook-level M2 chipset, a landscape-oriented front-facing camera, and landscape stereo speakers with spatial audio. Granted, this Amazon deal isn’t a great one, but £559 is still the best price you’ll find for the new iPad Air (well, it’s technically tied with Very and John Lewis).

View Deal

In our iPad Pro (2024) review (albeit for the 13-inch model), we describe Apple’s latest flagship tablet as “the impossibly thin king of iPads – and maybe all tablets.” Naturally, that level of quality comes at a premium, but EE has seen fit to discount the 256GB, Wi-Fi-only variant of the 11-inch iPad Pro (2024) to a slightly more digestible price.

View Deal

If you want the biggest and best iPad, both Amazon and John Lewis have the iPad Pro 13-inch (2024) on sale right now. It’s a mighty tablet and one that’s all the more attractive with a chunk of change off its price tag (even if this isn’t the greatest deal in the world).

View Deal

The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus has been cut by £300 making it a bit of an Android tablet bargain. It features Samsung’s most powerful tablet processor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, with AI capabilities incorporated into its system. The latest Vision Booster technology also supports a brilliant display that automatically adjusts brightness and contrast based on your environment.

View Deal

The basic Samsung Galaxy Tab A9 is down to an impressively low price at Currys – though I have seen it £15 cheaper in the past. This basic tablet has an entry-level processor, a small 8.6-inch screen and only 64GB of storage so expect slightly slower performance and struggles with games or multitasking, but it’s still a great tablet for light mobile computing.

View Deal

Over on Argos, the Samsung Galaxy Tab A9 can also be had for £129, which is good if the Currys deal has sold out. It’s the cheapest the Tab A9 has dropped at Argos, so do go and check it out.

View Deal

At under £500, the OnePlus Pad 2 is a bit of a bargain for a rather powerful and capable Android tablet. For the price, you get a 12.1-inch display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset and 67W fast charging; not bad for a tablet now under $500.

View Deal

Here’s a super-cheap Lenovo tablet deal at Argos. It’s getting older now and the spec is lightweight but if you just need an affordable device for everyday jobs, watching videos and light use this will be up to the task.

View Deal

This Honor Pad 9 is an affordable and versatile 12.1-inch tablet that does it all. It’ll serve you well as a device for watching videos and browsing the web, while also comfortably handling light work and admin tasks – especially with a handy Bluetooth keyboard included for free. Expect reasonable overall performance, an impressive 13-hour battery life, a smooth display and decent storage at 256GB. Overall, there isn’t a better budget tablet deal out there right now.

View Deal

Amazon’s all-new Kindle Paperwhite is on sale for the first time since launch. Previous versions have been reduced to under £100 in the past, but it’s unlikely we’ll ever see an offer like that again on this upgraded version. We found in our Kindle Paperwhite review that it’s packed with features to suit all avid readers, including an improved 12-week battery life, a larger glare-free 7-inch screen, adjustable warm light and storage space for thousands of books.

View Deal

The newest version of the standard Kindle is now on sale for the first time ever as part of the Cyber Monday sale at Amazon. It’s a basic ereader, but it still boasts a six-week battery life and space for thousands of books. Given it’s £45 cheaper than the Paperwhite, this is clearly a better pick for the infrequent reader after a more budget-friendly option. It’s still a solid option, though, with a 6-inch glare-free display, fast page turns and an adjustable front light to help you read in all environments.

iPhone SE 4 – 5 upgrades to expect, from a bigger screen to Apple Intelligence

iPhone SE 4 – 5 upgrades to expect, from a bigger screen to Apple Intelligence

The iPhone SE 4 looks set to launch sometime next year, with analysts and tipsters alike predicting a March release date for Apple’s next budget-friendly model.

The most recent iPhone SE – the iPhone SE (2022), otherwise known as the iPhone SE 3 – hit shelves almost three years ago (it launched just six months after the iPhone 13 series), and much has changed in the smartphone industry since then. Phones are bigger, faster, and more intelligent than ever, with consumers demanding more from even the best cheap phones.

The good news is that the iPhone SE 4 is rumored to boast several key upgrades over the iPhone SE (2022), which should help Apple’s much-rumored next iPhone compete with comparable midrange models from the likes of Samsung and Google. In this guide, then, we round up five of the biggest key upgrades to expect from the iPhone SE 4.

A bigger, better display

The iPhone SE 4 could use the same display as the iPhone 14 (above) (Image credit: Apple)

Arguably the most significant upgrade rumored for the iPhone SE 4 concerns its display. Where the iPhone SE (2022) uses a 4.7-inch LCD panel, its successor is tipped to use a 6.1-inch OLED display running at a resolution of 2532 x 1170 pixels. That’s essentially the same screen used by the iPhone 14, and since the iPhone SE 4 looks set to (finally) ditch the physical Home button, it will likely look a whole lot like the iPhone 14, too.

Naturally, being a bigger phone, the iPhone SE 4 will reportedly weigh a little more than the iPhone SE (2022) – specifically 165g to the latter’s 144g – but it will, at least, look significantly more modern than its predecessor.

Alas, like the iPhone 14 (and indeed the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16), the iPhone SE 4 will almost certainly be saddled with a 60Hz refresh rate, but it’s worth remembering that this is intended to be a lower-spec iPhone, after all. There is, however, some disagreement over whether the iPhone SE 4 will have a notch or a Dynamic Island – we’d wager the former.

Apple Intelligence compatibility

Apple Intelligence is available now on the iPhone 16 series (Image credit: Apple)

Another big rumor here: the iPhone SE 4 could support Apple Intelligence, which would make it only the seventh iPhone (after the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max) to do so.

This is significant, because even the iPhone 15 – which launched just over a year ago – isn’t compatible with Apple’s AI feature set. The iPhone SE 4 could therefore be the cheapest entry point into Apple Intelligence, and one of the best AI phones at its price point.

Compatibility with Apple intelligence would also mean that the iPhone SE 4 comes packing an Apple A17 Pro chipset and 8GB of RAM at the very least, since those are the minimum hardware requirements needed to run the software. The phone might even use the A18 chipset found inside the standard iPhone 16, or perhaps an entirely new Apple chipset.

A more powerful camera

The iPhone SE (2022) uses a 12MP rear camera (Image credit: Apple)

The iPhone SE 4 will very likely get a better camera than the almost three-year-old iPhone SE (2022), and the latest rumors point towards a single 48MP rear snapper and a 12MP selfie camera. That might sound disappointing – “Just one camera? In 2024?!” – but the new iPhone SE needs to make compromises somewhere, and a single-lens rear camera is a nice way of differentiating the SE from the rest of the pack.

What’s more, a 48MP main lens is no slouch – in fact, it’s in line with the main camera on the iPhone 14 Pro models and the entire iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 line.

There’s been no mention of a Camera Control button in rumors so far, which makes sense given that Apple is currently pitching it as a premium iPhone feature.

A longer-lasting battery

A fairly run-of-the-mill rumor here, but the iPhone SE 4 will almost certainly get a larger, longer-lasting battery than that of its predecessor. The latest leaks suggest it’ll be an iPhone 14-style 3,279mAh cell, which will surely bring tangible improvements over the “12 hours of battery life” we achieved when testing the previous SE for our iPhone SE (2022) review.

A brand new Apple 5G and Wi-Fi modem

Last but not least, the iPhone SE 4 is tipped to be the first iPhone to use Apple’s brand new 5G and Wi-Fi modem. Admittedly, that’s not a particularly exciting upgrade – it essentially means Apple can build a more tightly integrated and efficient device, which should mean less of a draw on battery life – but it is significant in terms of Apple’s overall product strategy.

As we reported last year, 5G modems are the critical components that allow devices to make calls and connect to the internet. Apple has been racing to develop its own 5G modems in a bid to reduce reliance on expensive third-party manufacturers like Qualcomm and to optimize future iPhone connectivity, and the iPhone SE 4 looks set to be the first beneficiary of this years-in-the-making project.

I love the Apple iPad mini and it’s now down to a record-low price at Amazon

The iPad mini is my favourite Apple tablet, and thanks to the current back-to-school sales, you can buy the iPad mini at Amazon for $379.99 (was $499). That’s the lowest price it’s ever dropped to and only the second time we’ve seen it discounted by this much.

The iPad mini often drops in price but it usually hovers around the $400 mark when it does. In the past, it dropped to its lowest-ever price of $379.99 in July, but before then, it hadn’t gone so low since last summer. So, now is a good time to buy if you missed out last month. Simply put, a 24% saving is always an appealing one.
